Modeling Residual Circulation and Stratification in the Oujiang River Estuary

EstuaryHydrodynamics

Overview

The Oujiang River estuary in China is a dynamic estuarine system shaped by the interaction of river discharge and tidal forcing. This study applied a three-dimensional hydrodynamic model to investigate residual circulation and stratification within the estuary.

Model Setup

The model was configured for the Oujiang River estuary to resolve the three-dimensional flow field, with particular attention to the residual (tidally averaged) circulation and the vertical density structure that develops under varying river discharge and tidal conditions.

Key Findings

The modeling provides insight into how residual circulation and stratification respond to the balance between freshwater inflow and tidal mixing in the Oujiang River estuary, supporting water management in this shallow estuarine system.
