Hands-on. Practical. Taught by the experts.
This focused one-day course is designed for engineers, scientists, and researchers working on navigation, dredging, or contaminated sediment projects who want to get up and running quickly with Propwash modeling in EFDC+ Explorer. Expect a mix of short lectures and hands-on sessions — you'll build, run, and analyze real Propwash scenarios alongside our team.
Edmonds is one of the most scenic small waterfront towns in the Pacific Northwest, with views across Puget Sound and the Edmonds–Kingston ferry running right past the training venue. From Seattle–Tacoma International Airport, it's a scenic one-hour drive — or light rail ride — through Seattle to Edmonds.
- Propwash fundamentals
- Propwash module setup (hands-on)
- Sediment transport & resuspension
- Scenario analysis & applications
- Navigation & dredging applications
- Contaminated sediment projects
A waterfront town worth showing up early for
The Edmonds–Kingston ferry runs right past our training venue, with the Olympic Mountains as a backdrop. Plan to arrive a day early or stay through the weekend — it's worth it.
Hear it from the people in the room
With 31+ trainings delivered to modelers around the world, here's what attendees told us in our post-training surveys.
The most helpful part of the training was interacting with the DSI staff and learning about the product through both lectures and the hands-on exercises.
The handouts and the hands-on exercises were great.
I found the Sigma-Zed and coastal modeling most helpful.

Prerequisites & Who Should Attend
Do I need prior experience with EFDC+ or EEMS to attend?
No. The Propwash Training is designed to get you up and running quickly, even if you're new to the software. Attendees with some prior EFDC+ exposure will also get value from the hands-on module setup and scenario analysis.
Is this training appropriate for academic researchers?
Absolutely. The course is designed for engineers, scientists, and researchers alike. If you're working with hydrodynamic or water quality modeling in any context — academic or applied — this training is relevant.
What background knowledge is helpful?
A general familiarity with environmental or water resources engineering concepts (hydrology, fluid dynamics, water quality) will help you get the most out of the sessions. No programming experience is required.
Software & Setup
What software do I need before arriving?
Software installation is covered during the morning session on September 24, so you don't need to have anything installed in advance. If you'd like a head start, downloads are available at eemodelingsystem.com/user-center/downloads.
Do I need to bring my own laptop?
Yes. Please bring a laptop capable of running EFDC+ Explorer. Windows is recommended.
Do I need a license to participate?
A working license or trial version will be provided during the installation session at the start of the training. Contact sales@eemodelingsystem.com ahead of time if you have questions about your license status.

A lunch break is scheduled (12:30–1:30 pm) but meals are not included in the registration fee. The venue is in downtown Edmonds, with several restaurants within walking distance.
Is parking available at the venue?
The Best Western Edmonds Harbor Inn has free on-site parking.
Are there discounted hotel rooms for attendees?
No room block has been placed.
How do I get there from Seattle–Tacoma Airport?
The drive from SEA-TAC to Edmonds is roughly one hour. You can also take Link Light Rail from the airport to downtown Seattle, then catch a Sounder commuter train north to Edmonds Station — a scenic option if you'd rather skip the drive.
About the Course
What's covered in the Propwash Training?
The Propwash Training focuses on Propwash modeling — including the fundamentals (lecture), module setup (hands-on), sediment transport and resuspension, and scenario analysis. It's a focused deep-dive for attendees working on navigation, dredging, or contaminated sediment projects.
Is the Propwash Training a standalone course?
Yes. The Propwash Training is a focused one-day course on September 24 that you can attend on its own. It also pairs well with our EEMS Training (September 21–23) if you'd like the full week.
Do I need to attend the EEMS Training first?
No. While prior EFDC+ experience is helpful, the Propwash Training stands on its own and starts with the fundamentals before moving into hands-on work.
After the Training
Will training materials be shared after the event?
Training materials are distributed during the course. Contact sales@eemodelingsystem.com for specifics on what's provided and in what format.
Will I receive a certificate of completion?
Yes, we provide a certificate of completion to all attendees.
What support is available after training ends?
DSI has built the EEMS Knowledge Base and offers technical support to all EEMS license holders. Academic users also have customized support options.
Will this training be offered again?
Future training dates haven't been announced yet, but DSI generally tries to offer this training annually. DSI also recorded the entire training a few years ago and posted it online for free — you can watch it here. If September 2026 doesn't work for you, email sales@eemodelingsystem.com to be notified when the next session is scheduled.
